Context and design approach
The design challenge for this interior design project was to transform a 55ft long and 15ft wide linear site into an office space that meets the functional requirements and embodies the desired modern and youthful atmosphere. The main objective was to break out of the stereotypical office layout with cabins and corridors, while also creating private cabins for the three owners and workspaces for 5-8 people. The space had to have an openness and flow, yet also provide privacy and sound barriers for the cabins.
To address the challenge posed by the elongated site, the design concept cleverly incorporates the length as a guiding principle. The existing internal walls were removed to create an open layout. The design language emphasizes the length of the space, exaggerating and highlighting it as a unique feature by positioning all the fixed furniture along the length of the office on both sides to create an open and free-flowing central area.
The left side of the office features a wall with windows, which is transformed into a porous wall by integrating a wireframe structure made of MS (mild steel). This wireframe structure not only adds visual interest but also facilitates the inclusion of landscape features, storage spaces, and air conditioning units (ACs). The left monochrome wireframe wall contrasts and compliments the solid beech wood massing on the right side, creating visual interest while maintaining a cohesive overall design.
The result is a modern and functional office space that successfully addresses the challenges posed by the site conditions. The design optimizes the available space, fosters a sense of openness, and reflects the youthful and contemporary outlook of the clients
